Journey
Tumelo Manyoni, better known by his stage name Mr JazziQ, was born on 3 March 1995 in Alexandra, Johannesburg. He spent much of his childhood in the care of his grandmother, while his parents lived in another part of the city. He studied at Highlands North Boys’ High School, and by his mid-teens he was already drawn to music. At just fourteen he was learning the basics of DJing, and two years later he had begun producing his own tracks.
His first major step into the music industry came as part of the duo JazziDisciples, which he formed with Josiah De Disciple. The pair became early pioneers of the amapiano sound, earning recognition with their 2019 project Disciples of Piano and live performances that helped carry the genre beyond local audiences.
By 2020, Manyoni was ready to branch out as a solo artist. His debut project 0303 introduced him as an independent voice, featuring the single “Askies,” which went on to achieve gold certification. That year he also issued the For the Babies EP and collaborated with Busta 929 on Maba Jabul’Abantu. Later projects such as Party With The English (2021) and All You Need Is Piano (2022), followed by its sequel in 2023, showed his ability to evolve while staying rooted in amapiano. Memorable singles like “Woza” and “Amaneighbour” strengthened his profile and featured collaborations with artists including Lady Du, Boohle, and Moonchild Sanelly.
Mr JazziQ’s efforts have earned formal recognition. At the 2021 South African Amapiano Music Awards, he won Best Male Artist and Best Collaboration, while also receiving continental nominations. His appearance on the cover of GQ South Africa in 2023 reflected his influence beyond music. In 2024, he partnered with Vigro Deep on The Grass is Greener, further cementing his place as one of amapiano’s leading innovators.
